Influence or Coincidence

Recently I did a review for Ergo Proxy. Upon searching the web for box art I came across this:

Being the Evanescence fan that I am, I found the similarities between Amy Lee on the cover of Fallen and Re-l very interesting. I have no idea if the character designers had Amy Lee in mind or if they even know who she is, but with many American influences as I have stated in my review such as American band Radiohead for the ending theme song, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. What is your take on it?

For those who don't know Ergo Proxy premiered in Japan on February 25, 2006 and Fallen was released on March 4, 2003.

    2. i kinda wish Ergo Proxy's Ending had Continued a bit before the actual ending. if you know what i mean.

hate how animé endings are on a suspence part of the story but leave you wanting to see more. yet it ends.

i loved the entire 23 episodes. they want you to watch the next after next. can i say, i watched it till near 4am. before venturing to bed each night.

  8. I think something you're failing to realise is that Amy Lee bases a lot of her image on the Asian scene. The tilted head and big eyes are typical of the 'little Asian girl' image seen so often in the Asian culture of today. Amy Lee isn't even her real name. It's Amy Lynn Hartzler. Basically what i'm trying to say is that both Amy Lee's and Re-l's image and looks aren't original at all, they just both use the Asian pose and happen to have the same hair style, commonly used, again, in Asia.

    1. AMY LEE IS HER REAL NAME, SHE BECAME HARTZLER AFTER SHE MERRIED TO JOSH HARTZLER... LOL
The character from the anime looks exactly like her, I can't agree with you...

  9. Well when I started watching ergo, I've always had the impression that Re-l looked familiar. Then i started searching for Amy Lee's photos and it struck me, their both the same! I've also started wondering if it was a coincidence or not.
And now I see I'm not the only one who has the same question.

  12. Amy lee is the only one who coan rock that hairstyle, the resemblance is too strong for it to be a coincidence. To the person that said Amy Lee uses styles from the Asian scene - No, the Asian scene uses styles from every other scene in the world, from goth, prep to dread locked styles, Asians can't be credited for creating a style other than that of whatever traditional style they had before western/global influence...and the big eyes look was a thing long before Asians took it on lol.

  13. I love both Ergo Proxy and Evanescence. I have 'Fallen' and I didn't see the similarity straight away. I think Amy Lee would love Ergo Proxy and I think the smilarity is just a coincidence. Cogito Ergo Sum.

  14. So this is HELLA LATE, but Re-L Mayer is an anagram for Amy Lee with an r added at the beginning and an r at the end. (saw on Twitter n pasted here via Apocalypsys) Doesn't confirm anything per se but the similarities are way too coincidental to be happenstance.
